Erie Street Plaza
oil on wood,6 3/4″ x 5″, 2017
This park and public space in Milwaukee opened in 2010. It is situated at the confluence of the Milwaukee River and Kinnickinnic River, just west of the entrance to the Milwaukee Harbor from Lake Michigan. The Hoan Bridge is located to the east of the plaza. As I was painting this, a passerby stopped to talk with me and a friend who joined me on-location. I’d heard that originally the plan was to plant weather resistant bamboo in the park. The passerby informed me that bamboo is considered invasive and that birch trees were planted instead. The eyes on the tree trunks reminded me of the famous collage by Herbert Bayer, “Aspen Eyes”.
